Recording a Podcast

Recording sound for a podcast is generally fairly straightforward. Either record an interview with a recording MP3 player, or use a PC/MAC microphone and record straight into the machine/software you’re using. Don’t worry too much about multiple takes, you can always edit them later with your editing software.

It is usually easier to record short files and stitch them together later rather than recording a long file and taking bits out. Either method is OK though, it’s a matter of personal preference.

Here’s a tutorial for Audacity. There are others out there too.

Magnatune is a good place to get Creative Commons-licensed music from. You need to sign up and tell them you’re a teacher and you’ll get the music for free. Alternatively, when you find an album you like click the license (sic) link, then go for non-commercial, scroll down until you see the link to the mp3s, click it and then right click your mp3 and download it. NOTE that this work is protected under the Creative Commons licensing system and will reuire you to attribute the work to the original artist and to provide a link to the site.

If you’re within the Shropshire Network (ie connected in school) you’ll be able to download licensed music for free from Audio Networks.  Outside the Shropshire network (ie at home or elsewhere) you will have to pay for the privilege of downloading this music.
